There’s something ancient about mushrooms. Something older than plants and animals, older even than us.
Fungi have existed for over a billion years. They colonised dry land before plants did. They built the underground networks, the mycelium, that still connect the trees of our forests today, letting them trade nutrients and chemical signals. What medicinal mushrooms are (and what they aren’t)
First, an important clarification. Medicinal mushrooms have nothing to do with “magic” mushrooms (psilocybin) or the porcini you fry on a Sunday. They’re specific species, studied for their bioactive compounds with documented effects on health.

You’ll spot it at once: it looks like a cascade of white icicles. In China they call it hóu tóu gū (monkey head mushroom), in Japan yamabushitake (the mushroom of the mountain hermits). Buddhist monks used it to sharpen focus during meditation¹.

How to weave them into daily life: the mushroom ritual
Medicinal mushrooms aren’t pills to gulp down in a hurry. In tradition, preparing them was an intentional act, a daily ritual of paying attention to yourself.
Three ways to bring them in:
1. In your morning coffee or cacao
